Future Volumes
Navy, Merchant Navy, Army & Air Force Movements (1939-1946)
VOLUMES 1 – 3 Naval and Merchant Shipping Movements (1939-1946)
The first three Volumes of the NORTH QUEENSLAND AT WAR series will be a compilation of ‘shipping’ movements in North Queensland waters from 1939 to 1946 inclusive.
Volume.1 1939-1942 (now available)
Volume.2 1943 (now available)
Volume.3 1944-1946
This “three-volume” set chronologically compiles movements of over 1500 vessels, both Merchant and Naval (large and small) in the North Queensland ports of Mackay, Bowen, Townsville, Lucinda, Cairns, Port Douglas, Cooktown, Portland Road, Port Stewart and Thursday Island. Each entry mentions where the vessel arrived ‘from’ and its destination on departure. Although no “ship manifests” are available, researchers will need to refer to Volumes 4 to 6 to determine which troops or units may have been embarked.
These first three Volumes will be continuously ‘page-numbered’ and are expected to exceed 1000 pages and record the coming and goings of more than 1500 vessels. Volume.1, itself, totals 306 pages of text and traces the movements of 411 vessels.
The comprehensive indexing will greatly assist researchers, or those people who simply wish to determine on what particular day a ship entered or departed a North Queensland port, on its way
VOLUME 4 RAAF and USAAF Movements (1939-1945)
VOLUMES 5 & 6 Allied Ground Forces (1939–1945)
Volumes 5 & 6 will concentrate on the locations of Allied “ground forces” in the North Queensland region during the Second World War, from 1939 to 1945. They will include AIF, ACMF and US Army Forces in Australia, and will encompass embarkation and disembarkation of troops at North Queensland ports. Women's Services, military hospitals, special training and research experimental facilities, anti‑aircraft batteries, fortifications and gun emplacements will also be included. Remnants that remain today of any WWII buildings or structures of significance will be listed, plus memorials that have since been dedicated to wartime activity. They will list all Australian Army personnel who lost their lives in North Queensland during that period.
VOLUME 7 Combined Index & Supplements
Volume 7 will contain a “Combined Index” to Volumes 1 to 6, and Supplements.
